It's likely that's what your CX-5 is doing, and you just didn't notice it before (it's often a very subtle factor). If the torque converter is locked, or less slip is allowed through the transmission in general, that engine drag will be a factor. If the transmission is programmed to let the torque converter spin freely, that energy won't make it to the engine, so there won't be engine drag slowing you down, so you'll coast longer. I’ve never owned anything with this transmission so I don’t if this is normal. There’s never any issue with acceleration, even at low speed, there’s no shudder but slowing down feels very mechanical sometimes. Energy is needed to turn the engine, and when not on the throttle, that energy can come from the car's momentum turning the tires, and that turning the driveshaft -> transmission -> engine. If I start to accelerate and decelerate in quick succession, it doesn’t seem to occur. In Sport mode, it's fairly aggressive about this and will slow quite a bit. FWIW, the automatic in my Cayenne will hold gears, slowing noticeably when I'm off the throttle, and will even downshift as it goes. The Buick was likely programmed to coast very well, while the CX-5 is likely programmed to coast less easily (it gives a more sporty feel, which is something Mazda's likely to try to create).

It's related to how the transmission is programmed to behave, with automatics (I assume both cars are), as well as other factors (and with driver behavior in manuals). The deceleration rate (and the creep speed) will vary from car to car.
